Obiano Assures Completion of Umueje Bridge in 3 Months

Published

on

The Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has assured that Umueje Bridge which opens access to the oilfields across the Omambala River would be completed in three months time.

Speaking during an unscheduled tour of the bridge Governor Obiano assured that in three months the Umueje community and the surrounding towns would be effectively linked up by the bridge.

“This is a very important Bridge. It opens up the agricultural area of the state. The people of this area are known for agriculture but they find it difficult to evacuate their produce to the cities. This bridge will very easily eliminate those challenges,” Governor Obiano explained.

According to him, the bridge also leads to the oilfields in Enugu-Otu Aguleri, a short distance of thirty minutes from the bridge.

Governor Obiano further expressed optimism that the bridge would open up the entire local government and make it easier for entrepreneurs to settle down and exploit the abundant endowments of the area.

Said he; “the bridge will open up Ayamelum as a whole because a lot of activities will happen around here. Industrialists will come here. And for the first time, Umueje will have electricity of their own. The engineering company handling the bridge will give me a design for a water turbine that will generate electricity for the whole of Ayamelum from this river.”

It would be recalled that when Governor Obiano took over the reins of leadership four years ago, he had made it clear that his administration would build roads and bridges that had economic importance.

The Umueje Bridge is the third major bridge that open access to the oil wealth of the state while also throwing the door wide open to the rich farm produce from the agrarian belt of Anambra State.

The other two are the Enugu-Otu Bridge which is the longest Bridge in the South East and the Iyiora bridge which is located in Anam.

Nigeria aims to sell 10 state-owned companies

Published

on

Nigeria will offer 10 state-owned companies for sale to selected investors and the public in the fourth quarter to raise 289bn naira ($797m) toward funding the 2018 budget, the country’s privatization agency said.
Preparations are in the final stages to begin the sale of the companies in industries that range from power through aviation to insurance, Joe Anichebe, a director at Abuja-based Bureau of Public Enterprises, said in an interview on Saturday in the southwestern city of Abeokuta.
Two of them, Nicon Insurance Ltd. and Skyway Aviation Handling Co. will be sold “this month or early next month” through an initial public offering, he said.
President Muhammadu Buhari signed a record 9.1trn naira budget into law in June, with a smaller fiscal deficit compared with the previous year, which the government seeks to fund from sources other than revenue from oil, its main export.

The privatization agency had pledged to raise 306bn naira to help finance the planned spending.
The agency sold a 21% stake in the state-owned mint to the central bank last week for 17.3bn naira, according to Anichebe.
It is also reviewing previous sales and plans to revoke deals where buyers haven’t kept to their agreements, he said.

Kidnapping in Nigeria: Hostages, including the Romanian one, in good health, ransom request expected

Published

on

The name of the Romanian sailor kidnapped in Nigeria on Saturday, together with other 11 sailors, from aboard a Swiss ship, cannot be revealed by the Romanian authorities. The authorities, along with the countries of origin of the other sailors, have started the procedure to identify the pirates holding hostages on the Nigerian coast. Switzerland has activated a crisis cell and expected the kidnappers to ask for ransom. According to the first information, the hostages are in good health, stiri.tvr.ro reports on Tuesday.
The Nigerian maritime authority has confirmed the hostages are from Romania, the Philippines, Slovenia, Ukraine, Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Pirates have kidnapped 12 crew members from a Swiss cargo vessel in Nigerian waters. A Romanian is one of them. He was part of the crew of a ship under Swiss flag, the Foreign Affairs Ministry informed on Monday.
The ship transported wheat from Lagos to Port Harcourt, a port city in southern Nigeria.
Pirates boarded the ship on Saturday and kidnapped 12 of the 19 crew members, stiri.tvr.ro reports.
Massoel Shipping said its vessel, MV Glarus (photo), was carrying wheat from Lagos to Port Harcourt when it was attacked on Saturday. “The pirate gang boarded the Glarus by means of long ladders and cut the razor wire on deck,” the firm said.
The kidnappings are a major problem in Nigeria, especially in the Niger Delta, where the country’s main oil fields are. Last year, ten hostages taking actions took place in Nigerian waters.
Foreign Minister, Teodor Melescanu, has activated the Crisis Cell to be in permanent contact with the local authorities.

Saraki visits Anambra, says Nigeria needs ‘well educated’ president

Published

on

Tony Okafor, Awka

The Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki on Tuesday visited the Anambra State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party to canvass for support for his presidential bid in 2019.

He asked the PDP faithful in the state to take a critical decision in the 2019 poll that would save the country from its present situation.

He said Nigeria would need a digital and well-educated president in line with the global trend.

He urged delegates of the party in Anambra to eschew sentiments and primordial considerations in their voting during the party’s presidential primary.

Receiving a rousing welcome by mostly youths of the party, Saraki said Nigeria must be rescued from the ethnic bigots and endemic sectional fanatics.

He said, “I came to seek your support for the presidential primary election, so I can emerge as your presidential candidate.

“Nigeria is at a crossroads, and we must redirect our country. People are asking if Nigeria is still one, many are not sure if they are still part of the Nigerian project.

“We need a president who is digital, a president who can move the country from this stagnation, one who can represent Nigerians without giving others seat and leaving others to stand.”

He said most countries of the world including Asian countries were not moving forward by accident, adding that such countries were progressive because their presidents understood the need to have a good country.

He urged the delegates that it was important that they elected a candidate who could hold the country firm and unite it to live up to her full potential.

Court Nullifies Impeachment Of Imo Deputy Gov

Published

on

It was celebrations for supporters of the Imo state deputy governor, Prince Eze Madumere after a state high court sitting in Owerri nullified his impeachment. Madumere who has been facing series of political battles since his declaration of interest to contest the 2019 governorship election is seen as a hero among his supporters.

The deputy governor, Eze Madumere had approached the court following his impeachment on 30th July, 2018 by some members of the state house of assembly despite a restraining court order.
In a ruling which lasted three hours, Justice Benjamin Iheka said the purported removal of the deputy governor from office did not follow due process of the law.
The trail judge noted that the constitution of the seven – member investigative panel by the state chief judge, Justice Paschal Nnadi on the allegations levelled against the deputy governor, Eze Madumere, was not in compliance with the provisions of the 1999 Nigerian constitution, as amended.

Justice Iheka frowned at the action of the state house of assembly which went ahead to impeach the deputy governor despite an order by the court restraining them from doing so.

No change — Nigeria’s central bank holds benchmark lending rate at 14%, with hawks and doves split.

Published

on

Nigeria’s central bank kept its main interest rate at 14 percent on Tuesday, Governor Godwin Emefiele said, in a split decision that reflected the bank’s need to contend with both sluggish growth and accelerating inflation.

Emefiele said three of the 10 members of the monetary policy committee who met voted to tighten by 25 basis points. The rate has been at a record high 14 percent since July 2016, and analysts polled by Reuters predicted the bank would again leave rates unchanged.

Nigeria emerged from its first recession in 25 years in 2017 but continues to suffer from sluggish growth and high inflation.
“There is need to maintain the current monetary policy stance and await a clearer understanding of the quantum and timing of liquidity injections into the economy before deciding on possible adjustments,” Emefiele said.
Annual inflation rose in August over the previous year for the first time in a year and a half, driven by food prices. And economic growth dipped to 1.50 percent in the second quarter, continuing a trend of slowing growth that began in the first quarter.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who came to power in 2015 partly on promises to restore Nigeria’s economy, plans to seek a second term in elections to be held in February 2019.

PDP Heads to Court over Osun Election

Published

on

By Iyobosa Uwugiaren

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has resolved to approach the court to quash the “illegal” declaration of the September 22, 2018 Osun governorship election as inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a press statement by the spokesman of PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan Monday, the party insisted that the polls had already been concluded and results announced in all polling and the collation centers, thus bringing the exercise to its lawful conclusion and removing INEC powers to declare the election inconclusive.

“Our electoral law is clear that once an election result is declared, INEC is bound to return a winner. INEC, in trying to play the card of the defeated All Progressives Congress (APC), contravened the law by refusing to announce a return, even when the declared results have thrown up a winner”, the party argued.
“Section 69 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) states that inter-alia in an election to the office of the President or governor whether or not contested and in any contested election to any other elective office, the result shall be ascertained by counting the votes cast for each candidate and subject to the provisions of sections 133, 134 and 179 of the constitution, the candidate that receives the highest number of votes shall be declared elected by the appropriate Returning Officer.

“Concurrently, Section 179 (2), (a) (b) of the constitution directly prescribes that “a candidate for an election to the office of Governor of a State shall be deemed to have been duly elected where, there being two or more candidates – (a) he has the highest number of votes cast at the election; and (b) he has not less than one-quarter of all the votes cast in each of at least two-thirds of all the local government areas in the State.”
The party further submitted that INEC’s action in declaring a concluded election as inconclusive was therefore an annulment, totally duplicitous, constitutionally illegal, ultra-vires and as such null and void.
The PDP demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of the Osun State Governorship Election Returning Officer, Prof. Joseph Fuwape, for succumbing to the pressure of the APC and declaring a decided election as inconclusive.
“We demand that INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, immediately summon the courage to do the needful by declaring our candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke, as winner.
“It is completely ludicrous, that INEC and the APC are now attempting to divert the narrative from the substance of the election by making outlandish allegations against the PDP and lobbying Civil Society Organisations and Electoral Observers to validate their illegality”, the party stated.
The party added that even if the Osun governorship election was conducted over and over again, the PDP will still win as the people of the state had chosen the PDP and its candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke, insisting that the September 22 election, under the laws, is conclusive and the party’s candidate must be declared winner.

NAF COMMISSIONS FORENSIC CRIME LABORATORY, TRAINS PERSONNEL IN CORE INVESTIGATIVE SKILLS & CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION

Published

on

In furtherance of its efforts to effectively employ scientific approaches to crime fighting, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commissioned the newly remodelled and equipped Forensic Crime Laboratory at the 057 Provost Investigation Group (057 PIG) Ikeja, Lagos. The event, which took place today, 24 September 2018, also witnessed the commissioning of a newly constructed Headquarters Building for 057 PIG, which is aimed at ensuring a conducive environment for the NAF Directorate of Air Provost to effectively and efficiently carry out criminal investigations as well as train its personnel.

Speaking during the commissioning, the Guest of Honour, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, lauded the efforts of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, in providing a befitting and functional environment whilst making inroads in the application of forensics in policing. According to him, the reactivation of the Lab is a testimony of the NAF leadership’s commitment to push the boundaries and improve on the methodologies and technological platforms to detect and analyse evidence of crime in the Service. He remarked that the effectiveness of the facility could, with time, become a force multiplier with regards to raising and maintaining the morale of airmen which would, in turn, enhance operational capability. While urging the beneficiaries of the facility to exploit its potential to the maximum, Mr Idris commended the CAS for the unprecedented achievements recorded in the area of capacity building in the NAF as well as for playing a pivotal role in bringing normalcy to troubled areas of the country.

While making his remarks, the CAS noted that the rapid growth of technology has led to an increase in the rate and extent of crimes. He observed that, following the expansion of the NAF Force Structure, it became obvious that the Service required a law enforcement arm with the capacity to effectively employ scientific approaches in all facets of its critical competencies, in order to enhance security and discipline in the Service. He noted that it was in fulfillment of this requirement that the new PIG Headquarters Building and NAF Forensic Crime Lab were being commissioned. Air Marshal Abubakar stated that, as a prerequisite to provision of the Lab, the NAF had embarked on the conduct of various specialists training for the personnel to man the Group. In this regard, the NAF, in conjunction with foreign partners from the United Kingdom (UK), had trained 16 Provost personnel in the Core Investigative Skills and Interview Techniques, while another set of 16 personnel would be concluding the Crime Scene Investigation Course by the end of the week. It is noteworthy that the last time such training was conducted in the NAF was about 30 years ago.

The CAS further disclosed that the investigative capacity of the Provost would be further enhanced through the training of 10 Provost Officers in the Advanced Detective Course at the Police Staff College Jos before the end of the year. He mentioned that the NAF was also expanding and enhancing its utilization of Military Working Dogs to boost physical security of critical NAF Bases as well as for integration into the conduct of Combat Search and Rescue operations. “In the same vein, 140 Air Provost personnel would soon commence the Force Protection in Complex Air Ground Environment training, in conjunction with the British Military Advisory Training Team. Furthermore, the rejuvenation of the Air Provost’s Explosive Ordnance Detection capability is projected to commence by the end of this year”, Air Marshal Abubakar added. The CAS also seized the opportunity to thank the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, for his leadership and determination in providing the enabling environment for the NAF to thrive, while also expressing the gratitude of the Service to the National Assembly, especially the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on the Air Force, for their commitment in appropriating the resources to enable the NAF effectively perform its constitutional roles. The CAS equally congratulated the NAF Logistics Branch for undertaking the work by Direct Labour. Air Marshal Abubakar ended by charging all Air Provost personnel to develop a strategic foresight founded on innovation, flexibility, willingness to collaborate with other security agencies as well as objectivity and fairness, in order to successfully meet the demands of contemporary policing.

Earlier in his address, the Commander 057 PIG, Group Captain Garuba Bello, stated that the Forensic Lab would significantly assist Air Provost Investigators in obtaining credible evidence for successful prosecution of cases in a court of law while also adding to the country’s crime fighting resources. One of the highlights of the event was the simulation of a Crime Scene Investigation, conducted by resource persons from Sustainable Criminal Justice Solutions UK and NAF personnel, to demonstrate the intricate process involved in evidence collection/capturing as well as the importance of ensuring effective control at a crime scene.

This particular project is quite apt at time like this in our history as a people. This is because, there is certainly nothing to be compared to a history being told by its owners.

Universities and various research institutes are expected to pick a copy for the archives.

BREAKING: INEC Declares Osun Governorship Election Inconclusive

Published

on

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the Osun State governorship election inconclusive.
The reason for the cancellation, according to the electoral body, is because the number of cancelled votes is higher than the margin between the two top candidates – Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party and Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress.

The election, one of the closest in Nigeria’s electoral history, was held on Saturday to elect a new governor for the South-Western state.
At the end of collation of results, Ademola Adeleke of the PDP won majority votes of about 254,698 while Gboyega Oyetola of the APC came a close second with 254,345 votes.
According to electoral rules, a re-run election can be so declared if the margin of victory in an election is lower than cancelled votes, such as in Osun where thousands of votes were cancelled in various local governments while the vote difference between the leading candidates was less than a thousand. In that case, rerun will be held in only affected areas where elections were cancelled.
INEC is expected to formally announce the rerun any moment from now.
