Dogara: History will be harsh on us if we fail to stop killings

Published

on

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has said that history will be hash to the present administration if it fails to stop mass killings of innocent Nigerians.
Speaking at the resumption of plenary on Tuesday, Dogara argued that whatever achievement that is being recorded by the government will not be remembered if the orgy violence and mass killings of innocent Nigerians continue unabated.
“History will have a harsh verdict for us as a Government if we fail to live up to this responsibility and it won’t matter if we succeed in other areas. Unfortunately, the stark reality now is that our citizens are fast losing confidence in our security system,” he said.
“This must not be the case. Before we ebb to the realm of anarchy, we must rise up as true representatives of the Nigerian people to salvage the situation and defend our hard-won democracy.”
The Speaker argued that the unresolved issue of rampant killing of defenseless people, including innocent and vulnerable children and women, in various parts of the country, calls for a sober reflection and more concerted efforts by the National Assembly to exploit all our Constitutional powers and privileges to ensure the protection of lives and property in the entire country by the security agencies.

Speaking on the resolution, the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki said:
“Distinguished Colleagues, irrespective of the decision that we have taken, I believe that our committees on defence and security, as part of their own responsibilities should engage with the security agencies to find out if there are other issues that need to be addressed in order to prevent such reoccurrences,” he said.

NASS Joint Committee Approves New Electoral Bill

Published

on

The National Assembly has produced another version of the electoral act amendment bill addressing concerns raised by president Muhammadu Buhari.

In the latest version which is the 4th in the series, the use of card reader is clearly spelt-out.
The document however eliminates the contentious issues of sequence of elections.

The joint committee on electoral act met for the second time in two days and at the end of the closed door session which lasted several hours, a decision was finally reached on the electoral act amendment bill 2018.
With the lawmakers coming up with what they believe is a clean version for presidential assent.
The latest version which the lawmakers hope would be their final copy is a blend of the older versions albeit with slight but significant amendments.
Quite notable is the outright removal of a poisonous clause on sequence of election.

The new version takes away from the national assembly the power to legislate on local government elections but restores section 138 c & d which explains the grounds on which elections can be challenged.
The new version may have finally rested the controversy over card reader with the lawmakers admitting that card reader was not included in the last version of the bill turned down by president Buhari.

APC Asks Saraki To Reconvene National Assembly Now

Published

on

The All Progressives Congress (APC) says the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is hiding under the yet-to-be assented Electoral Act Amendment Bill to draw attention away from what it described as the treasonable actions of the senate president, Bukola Saraki who has refused to convene the National Assembly to consider at plenary the crucial 2019 election budget of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The All Progressives Congress therefore, insisted that the National Assembly must be convened immediately.
The party noted that the Electoral Amendment Bill passed by the National Assembly was alive and awaiting assent noting that assent to bills in all democratic governments reflect the prudence and discretion of the president in balancing the powers of key constitutional bodies and understanding the concerns of the executive.
APC condemned what it regarded as the abuse of office by the senate president backed by his PDP cohorts in sabotaging the executive, specifically INEC.
The APC called on all Nigerians, civil society and the international community to resist the on-going travesty and legislative rascality being perpetuated by the senate president and the PDP, saying the sanctity of Nigeria’s electoral system is being threatened by the orchestrated sabotage and deliberate attempt to weaken INEC, as Nigeria prepares for general elections in 2019.
