WHY NDI IGBO MUST IDENTIFY AND MAKE EARNEST SACRIFICE TO SUSTAIN APGA

Published

on

By Bro Machi Pius Igwe

On many occasions I have wanted to write on this subject matter but have chosen to keep a sealed lip, why? Because they say that silence is golden though there is limitation and moderation to everything under the earth. It is said that a closed mouth is a closed destiny and that “Ekwu ekwu mere onu ma anu anu mere nti”. That is why I have taken my time to set down this set down now especially when there are many diverse views and opinions and divisions within the ranks of our great party.

Of all the political parties in Nigeria, it is only APGA that has been identified as Igbo party and the only party that have represented Igbo ideology of “Onye aghana nwanne ya”. APGA was founded by Chief Chekwas Okorie in 2003 and was betrothed to Gburugburu Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, yes I chose that word “betrothed” because Ojukwu did a lot, made dauntless life daring sacrifices to enhance APGA, to give it a national face but the incidental politicking of Igbo enwe eze has been the greatest challenge facing APGA till date. It is of note that the great Ikemba even though he was loved and respected so much as though he is a god amongst Igbos could not garner tangible votes in his both 2003 and 2007 presidential election outing as the party flag bearer.

APGA AND NIGERIAN MONEY POLITICS:-At least the party has shown that if it is financially boosted it could challenge to carve out national chunk out of Nigerian’s political equation. This experiment was tried and it succeeded in both Imo and Anambra where APGA has won both gubernatorial and senatorial election in past and presently. In Anambra in 2003 Peter Obi was given APGA ticket because he proved that he has the capacity to fund his election including flexing muscles with Ubah brothers who calls the shots in Anambra Politics back in those days. Repeatedly, again in Imo in 2011 APGA prove doubters wrong when incumbent Gov. Rochas Okorocha show up with the needed capacity, collected APGA ticket and went on to defeat the then incumbent Gov Ikedi Ohakim in the Imo gubernatorial election. If not because Rochas Okorocha greedily left with APGA mandate to APC, a combination of Imo and Anambra would have expanded APGA to Abia, Enugu and Ebonyi and beyond the southeastern region. But our politicians have continuously refused to identify with APGA thereby restricting the party to local league as a one state party. You can agree with me now that had we have people like Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Bisi Akande (of Igbo extraction) amongst others, APGA would have grown as big as PDP and APC. On several occasions victory has been snatched from APGA simply because capacity is lacking and the party would be bullied to sulk and accept defeat even with glaring victory. Typical example is the 2003 gubernatorial election that was clearly and expressly won by Peter Obi but was snatched and manipulated in favor of Sen Chris Ngige. Only God and much needed capacity guaranteed Obi his mandate back in a very prolonged legal battle in the election petition tribunals. The same way many APGA candidates were massively voted by the people who see APGA as the only Igbo party but in each occasion results are manipulated to favor the highest bidder in ruling party.

APGA AND SEVERAL LEADERSHIP TUSSLES:-I have come to understand that many flamboyant politicians of Igbo extraction who are members of the ruling parties have on many occasions sponsored leadership and legal tussle within APGA. The very reason Chief Chekwas Okorie the founder of the party left his party and formed UPP, it has been from one court case to the other, from one injunction to another order of mandamus. But in view of all these the party has been like a cat with nine lives that it survives all those legal arsenals being hurled at her. Throughout the reign of Peter Obi as Anambra Governor, it has been from one legal tussle to the other; between Chief Maxi Okwu vs Victor Umeh & others which Victor Umeh came out victoriously then during Governor Willie Obiano it has been Ozomkpu Victor Ike Oye vs Ochudo Martins Agbaso and others which Victor Oye also came out victoriously recently. Now it is believed and proved to be of a truth that these legal tussles are being instigated and financed by greedy and selfish southeast politician who fears that success of APGA to challenge for national political participation may impact negatively in their political interest and domination in the southeast.

APGA AND GRASSROOT DEVELOPMENTAL INITIATIVES:-It is without doubt that the leadership of Willie Maduaburochukwu Obiano of Anambra state has opened a new elevated and coveted page for APGA in not only Anambra but also in Abia, Imo, and Enugu however every success comes with challenges. Willie the working governor immediately he assumed office initiated his much talked about COMMUNITY CHOOSE YOUR PROJECT INITIATIVES which he used to take development to the rural areas and projects also largely undertaken and executed by grassroot contractors. This scheme did not only take development to the downtrodden and forgotten but was able to raise new contractors and new millionaires, new financial capacities and empowerment in Anambra State. Willie Obiano the master strategist used the community choose your project to touch communities, touch lives and advanced industrial capacities within our people. How? Because it worked in Anambra other states like Enugu and Ebonyi are emulating our working governor. For this singular reason alone, there has been influx of members into APGA in Enugu, Abia and Imo that now it become difficult for the party to handle. That is why I earlier said that success always come with challenges. While in place like Imo, Abia and Anambra many of the APC and PDP aspirants are drawn from many bulks of unpopular candidates APGA has to choose from multiple capacity aspirants (some were even incumbents) who came to contest under APGA. APGA buzi party BULU EBU…!

APGA AND THE FALL OUT OF ITS RECENT PRIMARIES ACROSS STATES:-There has been outcry from the just concluded APGA party primaries that it needed urgent attention however thank God that the party leadership has been working round the clock to address the situation to bring everyone under one page. In fact I was telling concern party faithful that this is the most trying time for the party and indeed a time to know those who believe in the party ideology and principle of ONYE AGHAKWANA NWANNE YA! People’s confidence, faithfulness and commitment to the party have been tried and lots could not be able to stand the trials that we even hear of the formation of New APGA in IMO. Well people are totally entitled to their reaction whenever they felt offended or pushed to the wall but like I have told many aggrieved members that in such circumstances one must take some quality time to think before acting because any action taken in haste may later be regrettable. We should remember that prior to 2015 election, lots of PDP members fell out with the then party hierarchy and staged a walkout including OBJ who openly tore his PDP membership card out of annoyance and in protest. Barely 3years after taking such drastic decision that led to PDP losing the later presidential election and gubernatorial election in many states those that left the party now regretted and returned back to PDP. This is after they have gifted victory to this perceived clueless administration of Presudent Muhammed Buhari and APC. Not only that PDP suffered but even Nigerians has suffered, hungry, naked, and sick, many died (some even ended up committing suicide). The developmental progress of APGA in Anambra (and Imo before Rochas decamped to APC) cannot be sacrificed on the altar of selfish revolution. There is need for patience, calmness while the leadership of the party is afforded all the time to initiate reconciliation for all the aggrieved members to return to one fold of a bigger and stronger APGA.

THE URGENT NEED FOR CALM, PATIENCE AND RECONCILIATION IN APGA:-I was very delighted when I stumbled on Senator Ifeanyi Ararume’s facebook wall lately and read for myself his calls and moves for reconciliation in Imo APGA. The National leadership of the party should not hesitate to reach out to all aspirants that lost in the just concluded primaries and ensure they have a round table discussion with them (even those that were somehow disqualified or not cleared at the dying minute to contest). With the spirit and principle of ONYE AGHANA NWANNE YA it should never be winner takes all in APGA, there should be some compensatory roles for those that lost out during the primaries and all of them should be brought together to work for the success of the party. I am calling on aggrieved aspirants to hold their peace and learn from Prof Chukwuma Soludo, Yes! He came with all humility to contest under the party in 2013 but the tides favored Chief Willie Obiano as it does many of the party candidates now, lots of political prostitutes left APGA then, but Prof Soludo being wise, patient and decisive so he stayed back and worked tirelessly for the party! We should know that there is a reason for everything that happened and we should leave that in the hand of God whether we believe or not. President Buhari was not a Christian but he contested for president 3times and failed till he won in 2015! Late President Nelson Mandela of blessed memory is another typical example of patience and success of struggle in that he spent 27donkey years in prison but still came out to become South Africa’s president and delivered his nation from the curse of apartheid! Alh. Atiku Abubakar contested Gongola State gubernatorial election in 1991 and won against Dr. Bala J Takaya of which was truncated by IBB June 12 1992 election annulment and Gen Sani Abacha’s subsequent military takeover, he tried again in 1999 and won but was chosen as OBJ’s running mate and bequeathed the governorship seat to Boni Haruna. We all know how many times now Atiku Abubakar has contested for presidency and lost. He was able to pick PDP ticket recently and may emerge winner come 2019…. What do we learn from his resilient attitude? That he who fights and run away, lives to fight another day! That patience pays and that we cannot gain much with political grandstanding or creating rancor and division here and there within the same house we have suffered much to build.

THE WAY FORWARD AND WHY NDI IGBO SHOULD EMBRACE APGA:-I have been attacked severally by those that felt they have been robbed and cheated by APGA and have every reason to set the house on fire but I said wait, calm down, think twice before you act further. It is however possible to drag a horse to the river but almost impossible to force the horse to drink water. I am calling on all warring parties and members of this great party to sheath their swords. Lot of impunities and election irregularities worse than APGA’s has happened in many political parties over the years and lately but it was considered very wrong and unfounded that such should be discussed in the open. These are internal party affairs and should be handled within the party and the party’s decision should be considered paramount and binding on all members. Even though the issue of political decampment has become the most shameless and regrettable aspect of Nigerian’s democracy that people joins party without even understanding the party’s ideology. APGA’s slogan said “BE YOUR BROTHER’S KEEPER” meaning that as Christ told Peter that he must forgive his brother 70X7times to show that he loves, this also should be practiced and applied to APGA members! This is the time to identify true APGAns, those that really understand and are ready to live by the principle of “ONYE AGHAKWANA NWANNE YA” meaning as APGA member, you must strive to forgive and “BE YOUR BROTHER’S KEEPER” not like Cain who as result of rejection or loss killed his brother Abel in cold blood and was asking God, “AM I MY BROTHER’S KEEPER?”. What I noticed of gun trotting and cult clashing incidents lately was never the party’s ideology! The party APGA was built on love and must be sustained thus! Those that came into the party violent inclined should be told that APGA is all about peace, love and togetherness!

MY CONCLUSION:-I will use this medium to call on all APGA members, all southeast religious leaders, Ohaneze Ndi Igbo and other Igbo socio-cultural organization to pray and make possible sacrifice for the survival and expansion of APGA! The same way AD identified with Afenifere (the AD too had issues but Yoruba leaders intervened and ensure peaceful resolution and truce) back in those days should APGA be considered as the only party that have projected and defended Igbo interest. Apart from prayers that I have suggested, our leaders must reach out to the leadership of the party for a possible truce and thereby chart a way forward! APGA against all odds is still the only tangible and sustainable legacy Ojukwu left for the Igbos and it will be calamitously shameful if we cannot but make sacrifice to sustain and grow this progressive conscious political party beyond regional supremacy! It was AD that metamorphosed to ACN while APP transformed to CPC and both gave birth to the present day APC, If APGA is supported to takeover Imo and Abia where they presently fielded formidable candidates with dreaded structures; I can see uhuru and good tides ahead for the party. I am calling on all Igbos to think twice, never give in to sabotaging tendencies and stand with the party and we are going to get it right in many Igbo states as we have done in Anambra just very soon.

Fear Grips Imo APC-Okorocha Abandons Rescue Mission APC Faction Aspirants

Published

on

Palpable fear has enveloped the Rescue Mission political Group in Imo State as their mentor and Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha has ran to an Abuja based High Court to safe-guard the APC Orlu Senatorial ticket which he claims to be in possession of.
To the shock of many, Governor Okorocha who due to his attitude towards the Judiciary, is seen as no conformists to laws of the land, this time eventually ran to the protection of Court over the contentious Orlu Senatorial ticket.
In a suit between Rochas Anayo Okorocha the claimant/Applicant with All Progressive Congress APC, and INEC as Defendants, the Governor asked the Court to “restrain the 1st Defendant/Respondent whether by itself, its Executive, Agents, Servants, Privies, Representatives, Nominees and/or any other person or persons howsoever described from Substituting the claimant/Applicants name or removing or changing his name with any other winner of the primary election for Imo West Senatorial District”.
This application in Abuja High Court by Okorocha has sent jitters down the spines of Okorocha’s fellow Aspirants under the camp of the Rescue Mission Group, otherwise called “Agburu”.
Why Okorocha moved fast to institute this injunction barring any other fellow access to the Orlu APC Senatorial ticket is an indication and fear that his name could be substituted with that of another by INEC and APC.
However, by going to Court without the notice of some Okorocha’s loyalists who are also Aspirants has raised questions among the Rescue Mission Aspirants.
Those said to be confused with Okorocha Court application include Senator Nnamdi Obiaraeri, who is relying on Okorocha for Okigwe Senate seat, Hon Chief Chike Okafor putting his trust in Okorocha for a second term for Ehime Mbano/Obowo/Ihitte Uboma Federal Constituency Seat, Chief Kingsley Uju for Ohaji/Egbema/Oguta, Oru West Federal House.
For over a week now, Okorocha has relocated to Abuja to fight for the Imo APC Governorship ticket, which he thought was reserved for his son inlaw, Chief Uche Nwosu, but being challenged by Senator Hope Uzodinma.
However, while in Abuja, Okorocha was said to have realized that his own ticket was at risk too, hence he quickly ran to Court.
But Okorocha in the process, has left his lieutenants confused, as he could not act as a Leader by jointly applying for a litigation that would have also protected those in Rescue Mission fighting to be candidates of APC.
Trumpeta learnt that Okorocha may have sought for the Court action to protect his Senate ticket when it became clear that APC may decide to give automatic tickets to its serving legislators, which may include, Senator Hope Uzodinma assuming he loses the APC Governorship ticket in Court.
Therefore, Okorocha ran to Court to safe-guard his own ticket abandoning the rest of his flock.
Trumpeta learnt that Senator Ben Uwajumogu is likely to pick a return ticket for the Okigwe Senate Seat, leaving Obiaraeri to clutch the sticks, Hon Nana Opiah is tipped for a Ohaji/Egbema/Oguta/Oru West Seat, and Kingsley Uju sacrificed, and Hon Emeka Nwajiuba, said to be a close ally of President Buhari has been reserved for the Ehime Mbano/Obowo/Ihitte Uboma ticket, with Chike Okafor the loser.
Therefore, in the case Uche Nwosu loses Imo Governorship ticket to Hope Uzodinma, it means Okorocha would have sacrificed his “Boys” while his Orlu Senate ticket is secured.

Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu: Which way APGA? (1)

Published

on

By Emma Okocha

“Female monarchy is against the will of God… God has revealed that it is more than monster in nature That a woman should reign and bear empire above man.”
– John Knox, the first Blast of the Trumpet against the monstrous government of women

Scottish author John Knox was not alone in his opposition to the realm of Queen Elizabeth I (1533 – 1603) archetype, and the first feminist of the liberation of feminine power. Her epochal reign had paved the way in the mind of mankind about the capabilities and possibilities of women that culminated in the modern women’s right movements. Indeed, in 1570, Pope Pius V had excommunicated Elizabeth and theoretically deposed the Queen issuing numerous decrees calling for her death. Ten years later, in 1580, the Vatican put out a contract on Elizabeth’s life and, in the words of the Papal Secretary, it decreed that “whosoever sends her out of the world with the pious intention of doing God service not only does not gain sin but gains merit.”
The APGA was founded with the express approval and blessing of the Ohanaeze when the African Philosopher King and constitutional expert, Professor Nwabueze was the Secretary General and Dr. Pius Okigbo away from the limelight controlled the Ohanaeze. Dr. Okigbo was the only Igbo in those days who could look General Ojukwu in the face and tell him to either calm down or go to hell. When before the Oputa Panel arrived Enugu and the Odumegwu was not going to take the lead witness stand, Okigbo advised Nwabueze to unleash the best of the Igbo to take the stand and call Ojukwu’s bluff. There were luminaries: the late Barrister Ikeazor, Philip Umeadi, Mbazulike Amaechi, Professor Anthony Modebe, who staggered the panel’s secretary, Father Kukah, when he thundered, “I am Professor Anthony Modebe, a 1958 Professor Modebe, a 1958 Professor of Agricultural Sciences, University of Ibadan. All the Nigerian problems started before me in Ibadan.” Father Kukah asked him to repeat his opening statement. “You are Professor Modebe and in 1958 you were already a professor at the University of Ibadan?” After the productive outcome of the Ohanaeze testimonials at the Opute Panel, Justice Ozobu, Prof. Nwabueze Ohanaeze leadership added another feather to their cap when it received the APGA proposals asking for Ohanaeze’s blessing and support to form a party that would fly and protect Igbo interests in the Nigerian federation. Ohanaeze, led by Professor Nwabueze, would prefer Ohanaeze was out of politics. When the proposal was forwarded to the Ohanaeze Strategic Committee, headed by Senator Uche Chukwumerijie, an unrepentant Ojukwu student, and before we made our recommendations, I had argued that we would be in a better position and APGA would gain a lot if the Strategic Committee would in the first place define what’s the Igbo primary interests as a contending and cooperating group in the Nigerian federation. Initially, late brilliant Clem Nwankwo was intellectually on my side and we went to work. That sojourn was aborted and the whole Ohanaeze deliberation was sent to ecstasy when the name Odumegwu Ojukwu was announced as the presidential candidate for the APGA organization. Nwabueze, true to his principles, packed his bag and baggage. Dr.Okigbo, like many others, abandoned Nwabueze and rooted for Odumegwu, and General Odumegwu Ojukwu, who was never a member of the Ohanaeze for the third time in his memorable life, was crowned King of the Igbos (ps. see details in Emma Okocha, The Jews of Africa).

Under Ojukwu, the APGA didn’t need any seawide manifesto to reach their base. Ojukwu without any more tommyrot was everything, including the symbol and the platform of the party. When the Odumegwu took his last salute, the APGA had shrunk and it looks now that the Igbo party is losing its people, and in a federation of dwindling expectations the other prominent groups have been able to stabilize, employed accepted political parties, to hold fast, claim their territories and whether by their own brutal demands or by their own strategic alliances protected their own at the centre.
In an era of voter apathy, why is the third biggest party in Nigeria hunkered down in Anambra and on one hand allowing its secretarial in Abuja to be overtaken by defecting former members of PDP?
Who is APGA’s presidential candidate and why a retired Nigerian Army General?
Why is APGA not preparing to run and win elections in friendly base environment like in Delta State, especially in Anioma areas?
Why has APGA up till now no scientific policy paper for Biafra?
Why is the APGA headquarters not sited at Aba the soul city of the Igbos?
Why has the APGA allowed the Igbo mammy water, the fair lady, whose beauty like Helen of Troy caused Kings and Princes to go to war, why has the party following her Senatorial bid stood akimbo and allowed her name and her golden Odumegwu Ojukwu status and legacy defamed and put to shreds?

The governor appealed to the federal government for assistance to bail out the state through the Economic Stabilisation Fund.

The state, he said, would embark on social investment, education, agriculture and rural development.
We are ready to work with everyone to create a landmark progress.
We are committing to world best practices and deploy all skills to honestly work for the progress of the state.

Buhari to Obasanjo, Atiku: You will lose together

Published

on

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo addressing a world press conference on his endorsement of PDP Presidential Candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar

The Presidency has dismissed the endorsement given by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to his former lieutenant, Atiku Abubakar as a non-event, saying it was least surprised by Obasanjo’s somersault and U-turn.
In a statement, the President’s SSA media, Garba Shehu said the endorsement in Abeokuta at a press conference was a well-rehearsed theatre.
“They will lose together. Listening to the prepared statement of the former President after the meeting showed the usual ego trip and “I know it all” character of Chief Obasanjo”, Shehu said.
“In the first place, we dare to say that a pompous statement from the former President advising Nigerians on a vote against President Buhari is the best recommendation that can come at this time.
“It also betrayed a lack of understanding of today’s politics which is about good governance.
“The country voted for change in 2015 and a leader that ensures good governance which only President Buhari and the APC can provide.
“Bent on these laudable goals, we will not allow ourselves to be distracted.
“We are busy on various national issues including the restructuring and the diversification of the economy, fighting corruption, terrorism and other threats to national security; increasing the availability of electric power, improving education, health, and providing long-delayed infrastructure – roads, rail, airports and so forth.
“Many governments have come and gone, but they did not care about some of these projects.
“We were talking about these things for sixteen years under the PDP and nothing was done.
“President Buhari is proud of his record because his achievements are verifiable, while that of the PDP is manifested by the devastating social and economic impact of large scale corruption during their governance.
“The President will not relent in the war against corruption because the ordinary people are the ultimate victims if we surrender to corruption and let its perpetrators go unpunished.
“Abandoning the war against corruption is not an option. President Buhari is in this battle against graft because he cannot allow a few, rapacious, and selfish class of the elite to divert the resources meant for the well-being of the ordinary people to their private pockets.
“Nigerians trust President Buhari in this effort because they are convinced he is not in government for personal financial benefits, or for an ego trip. It is just eleven years ago that the former President and Vice President in their ugly fight for power accused each other of corruption. Nigerians are yet to forget all that”.
