When it comes to fashion, Nigeria has already won the World Cup

Published

As the English team arrived in Russia in Nike tracksuits, the Mexicans looked ready to sell you a flat and the Iranians went tie-less. But it was Nigeria who stole the show.

Nigeria

The real reason we’re here: Nigeria. The team arrived in white suits similar in style to that worn in the south of the country, and featuring the green and white floral motif of the Super Eagles. The white hats? Pure Borsalino. The backless white loafers? Inspired by Gucci. Hope to God no one spilled a tomato juice down theirs during turbulence.

South Korea

South Korea are always ahead with the trends. Neon shades were paired with dark outerwear on the spring 2018 catwalks at Christopher Raeburn and Christopher Shannon, and here, too, it seems, with the South Korean team landing in tracksuits decorated with highlighter pen. The anti-pollution masks may seem irrationally anxious, but sheet masks are actually huge in K-beauty, especially on flights.

The purpose of a suit is the very thing that defines it: restriction. You can’t go wrong in one unless you are trying to. It is thoughts like this that spring to mind when you see Cristiano Ronaldo arriving not for court, as the outfit would suggest, but in Russia, in the Portuguese three-piece suit, aviators and … a double-breasted, lapelled waistcoat? The humanity!

Mexico’s team players arrive for the World Cup.

Mexico

Sure, in their T-shirts and blazers they look ready to sell you a flat, or as if they have ordered a litre of Grey Goose in a roped-off area at Bunga Bunga even though they are only drinking Lucozade. In spite of this, they are one of the best dressed teams – faint praise given that they aren’t wearing socks.

Iceland

Here we have a suit jacket that plays on the various colours of an Icelandic snowdrift reflecting the sky, paired with trousers the shade of black ice on Iceland’s Route 1. Combined, a nice patriotic touch. To paraphrase Maria Grazia Chiuri for Dior, blue is the only colour that can ever compete with black. It’s all very well laughing at the man buns, but best not count our chickens yet after last time.

19th NSF: Rivers, Ondo win gold medals in 100m

Published

on

Usheoritse Itsekiri of Rivers and Bukola Boluwatife of Ondo State emerged winners of the men’s and women’s 100m races respectively at the ongoing 19th National Sports Festival (NSF) on Wednesday.
Itsekiri coasted home in a time of 10.27 seconds to win the male event’s gold medal, while Boluwatife crossed the finish line in 11.45 secs in the women’s race.
Egwero Oghene of Delta and Enoch Adegoke of Rivers finished in 10.32 secs in the men’s race, but the former won second place by arriving hundredths of a second earlier.
In the women’s category, Peace Uko of Cross River came second to take silver, while Joy Udoh of Delta returned in 11.53 secs to settle for the bronze.
Speaking with reporters after the race, Itsekiri said it was the sprint if his life, as he never expected to win gold.
“This was based on the fact that my personal best time was one of the poorest among the finalists,’’ he said.
On her part, Boluwatife said she was expecting nothing less than a victory because she had trained hard for the NSF.
Several athletics events were cancelled at the 19th NSF, with organisers citing inadequate funds.
Events such as 200m and relay races were not featured at the games, but action continues in 400m, shot put, javelin and other track and field events on Thursday.

Salah sends Liverpool atop, Chelsea tame Man City

Published

on

Mohamed Salah’s hat-trick fired Liverpool to the top of the Premier League on Saturday with an impressive 4-0 win at Bournemouth, while Manchester City stumbled at Stamford Bridge.
The defending champions had their unbeaten run in the English Premier League broken by Chelsea, with an emphatic 2-0 defeat.
At Old Trafford, Manchester United finally hit some free-scoring form with a 4-1 win over Fulham.

At the Emirates Arsenal laboured to extend their unbeaten run to 21 games, but left it late to beat Huddersfield 1-0 thanks to Lucas Torreira’s overhead kick seven minutes from time.
Chelsea inflicted the defeat on Manchester City with goals from N’Golo Kante and David Luiz.
Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling had early efforts denied by Kepa Arrizabalaga, before Chelsea took the lead on the stroke of half-time.
Eden Hazard’s cutback from a counter-attack found Kante, who fired into the roof of the net.
City trailed for only the second time this season and Ederson had to palm away Willian’s second-half free-kick to avoid the deficit being doubled.
David Luiz sealed the points, heading in Hazard’s 78th-minute corner as Arrizabalaga ensured a clean sheet with a fine late save from Gabriel Jesus.
But Liverpool took full advantage of kicking off first on the south coast to start a big week in the best possible fashion by moving a point ahead of their title rivals.
Salah had been rested from the start for Wednesday’s 3-1 win at Burnley that kept Jurgen Klopp’s men on City’s coat-tails, and the Egyptian looked to have benefited from a break as he looked more like the player who netted 44 goals in an incredible debut season at Anfield.
The visitors were slightly fortunate to take the lead on 25 minutes when Asmir Begovic fumbled Roberto Firmino’s long-range shot. Salah’s follow-up effort was allowed to stand despite him appearing to be marginally offside.
Salah made the game safe by showing determination to stay on his feet despite being fouled before finding the bottom corner early in the second-half.
Steve Cook’s own goal then made it 3-0 before Salah sealed his hat-trick by remaining remarkably cool to dribble past Begovic twice before prodding home.
“What Mo did around his two goals in the second half was just exceptional,” said Klopp. “I don’t know at the moment a lot of players who would have scored these two goals.”
United took advantage of Bournemouth’s defeat and Everton not being in action till Monday to rise up to sixth by ending a four-game winless run in the league with a comfortable victory over bottom club Fulham.
Jose Mourinho again rang the changes, but continued to leave Paul Pogba on the bench.
And it was three of those introduced to the side from Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal that scored in the first-half with Ashley Young, Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku on target.
“We were strong, aggressive and intense,” said a happy Mourinho. “At times it was beautiful football. The first-half was perfect.”
Aboubakar Kamara’s penalty pulled a goal back for Fulham, but any hope of a fightback from the visitors was ended by a red card for Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Marcus Rashford added a fourth for the hosts.
Arsenal are still yet to lead a Premier League game at half-time this season, but again came good late on when Torreira acrobatically met Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s cross to lift the Gunners above north London rivals Tottenham into third.
Ralph Hasenhüttl’s start to life as Southampton manager got off to a terrible start as Callum Paterson scored the winner in a 1-0 victory to move Cardiff up to 14th and three points clear of the bottom three.
Burnley also moved out of the drop zone courtesy of a first win in nine games as James Tarkowski scored the only goal to beat Brighton 1-0.
West Ham recorded a third straight win to move into the top half by coming from behind to beat Crystal Palace 3-2 thanks to second-half goals from Robert Snodgrass, Javier Hernandez and Felipe Anderson.

Okowa Gives $50, 000 To The Super Eagles

… Hosts The Team To A State Banquet

Gov Okowa

DELTA State Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa yesterday, redeemed his pledge of $25, 000 dollars per goal scored by the Super Eagles in their African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.
In the football encounter which took place at the weekend in Johannesburg, South Africa, the match ended 1-1 with the Super Eagles qualifying for the championship billed to hold in Cameroon in 2019.
At a state banquet yesterday held in honour of the Super Eagles at Government House, Asaba, Governor Okowa disclosed that though, the match ended 1-1, he saw the Super Eagles scoring more than one goal.
“As a state government, we did make a promise that we will give 25, 000 dollars per goal in the AFCON qualifying match in South Africa; in my mind, I know we scored two goals, not one goal, because the second goal was wrongly disallowed, so, we will fulfil our promise with what we saw, not with what was announced by the referee,” the governor said.
Governor Okowa disclosed that the camping of the Super Eagles in Asaba was a blessing in several ways. The Super Eagles trained at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba from where they departed through the Asaba International Airport to South Africa. Shortly before their departure, Governor Okowa promised to reward them with the sum of $25, 000 for every goal scored which motivated the Super Eagles to qualify for the continental championship.
According to him, “we are very happy that you left for South Africa from Asaba because you enabled us to witness the first international flight from the Asaba International Airport; I am truly excited this evening that we are hosting our dear Super Eagles as a state government and the Ugandan Team that earlier played with the Super Eagles at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, we truly enjoyed ourselves because the two teams played good football.”
“It was good to host the Super Eagles, they have been with us for some days now and I believe that the people, Deltans and Nigerians in general are excited; though, they drew the match with the Cranes of Uganda, both team played good game and it was gladdenjng to know that both team have also, qualified for the African Cup of Nations,” he said, disclosing that the coming of the Super Eagles to Asaba greatly gave a boost to socio-economic life of Deltans.

He stated that his administration will continue to invest in the development of sports and sporting activities, noting that Principal’s Cup and the Headmaster’s Cup football championship were designed to encourage the development of football in secondary and primary schools in the state.
Governor Okowa congratulated the Super Eagles for qualifying for AFCON, assuring that his administration would continue to support the Pinnick Amaju led Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to succeed.
President of NFF, Mr Amaju had in his speech, thanked Governor Okowa for his support to the Super Eagles, stating that the team had qualified for the 2019 edition of AFCON.
“We should thank Governor Okowa for not just chesting out for NFF but, giving us everything we need to qualify for AFCON, I am a very proud Deltan; we have come to Delta, we have seen and we can testify that things are okay; Your Excellency, we want to thank you; in March, 2019, the Super Eagles will come back to Delta State to play with another international team, please, continue to support the Super Eagles.”
Captain of the Super Eagles, Ahmed Musa on behalf of members of the Super Eagles, thanked Governor Okowa and the people of Delta State for their support for the Super Eagles.
“We will love to come back here again and on behalf of my team mates, we say thank you,” he said expressing confidence that Governor Okowa will be re-elected in 2019 to enable him join the Super Eagles as Special Guest of Honour at AFCON in Cameroon.
High point of the event were the performances of renowned Nigerian comedians and musicians and the presentation of a Super Eagles jersey signed by all the members of the team to Governor Okowa.
The governor in turn, presented the money he promised the team for every goal scored to the Captain of the Super Eagles, Ahmed Musa.
The Cranes of Uganda that earlier held the Super Eagles to a goalless draw at the Stephen Keshi Stadium were also present at the dinner.
