Nigeria’s ruling party denies split

Published

on

A spokesman for Nigeria’s governing APC has dismissed reports of a split in the party as the work of “mischievous and ill-advised” individuals who may not even be party members.
The breakaway faction, known as Reformed APC, is led by Buba Galadima, a former ally of President Muhammadu Buhari. Members of the splinter group say that the president’s government is incompetent.
Their emergence is seen as a major threat to Mr Buhari’s bid for a second term in office.
The statement from the APC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, continues:

”Having failed to scuttle the National Convention as was their original plan, they now resort to this subterfuge as a way of achieving the pre-determined end of causing confusion”.

As a matter of fact, we doubt that these individuals parading as leaders of the so-called faction are actual members of of our party. We are currently investigating their true membership status within the party.”

Breaking: Court sacks Kashamu as PDP candidate

Published

on

The Court of Appeal in Ibadan on Tuesday set aside a court order which directed Independent National Electoral Commission to recognise the list of candidates submitted for the 2019 general elections by a faction of Ogun PDP loyal to Sen. Buruji Kashamu.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Shittu Abubakar of the Federal High Court Abeokuta had on Oct. 2 ordered INEC to recognise the list of candidates submitted by the Chief Bayo Dayo executives loyal to Kashamu.
The applicants in the appeal are the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), its National Chairman, Uche Secondus and Secretary, Ibrahim Tsauri.
The respondents are Dayo-led Ogun PDP executives loyal to Kashamu and INEC.
The three-man appeal panel led by Justice Haruna Tsammani unanimously agreed that the lower court was wrong in its decision and consequently set aside the order, saying it was null and void.
Tsammani, however, said the applicants were not properly served the originating summons at the lower court which would notify them that there existed a case before the judge assumed jurisdiction.
The judge said service of the originating summons was fundamental and a precondition which would affect and determine the validity of the court ’s proceedings.
“ Non-service of the originating summons on the applicants at the lower court rendered all the order given at the lower court against the applicants a nullity and this is an indication that the applicants were not given a fair hearing.
“In the interest of justice, the order of the lower court is set aside, null and void and an academic exercise,’’ the judge said.
Tsammani ordered that the case be returned to the Chief Judge for reassignment to another judge other than Justice Abubakar.
Speaking to newsmen after the judgment, the counsel to the Dayo-led executive, Ifeoma Esom, expressed dissatisfaction with the judgment of the court.
She said her client had directed her to proceed to the Supreme Court.
But counsel to the PDP, Emeka Etioba (SAN), said he was satisfied with the judgment and commended the judges.
NAN reports that the PDP had earlier submitted the list of candidates which had Oladipupo Adebutu as the governorship candidate of the party in Ogun to INEC before the Oct. 2 order of the lower court recognising Kahamu’s list. (NAN)

Atiku Asks Buhari to Resign over State of Economy

Published

on

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, yesterday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign from office, saying the president’s recent assessment of the nation’s economy, in which he stated that it had gone out of control, was enough evidence that he had failed.
The president had told state governors last Friday in Abuja that the economy had become so bad that new strategies had to be found to revamp it, admonishing Nigerians to brace up for rough times ahead.

Atiku in a statement in Abuja yesterday by his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Mr. Phrank Shaibu, described the president’s assessment indicating Nigeria’s economy had collapsed under his watch as not only a self-indicting ploy to attract the sympathy of Nigerians, but also a disguise to get a soft landing from the people, who the main opposition flag bearer said he had put under terrible suffering and hardship in the last three and half years.
“The result of course is this late hour confession of failure on the eve of our general elections, in the hope that millions of Nigerians, whom he has condemned to poverty and hardship will give him a clap for failing abysmally. I dare say that President Buhari has miscalculated badly on this matter because Nigerians are simply fed up with him,” he said.
Atiku added, “The economy has collapsed under his watch and he has by this frank remarks admitted that he has no idea on how to fix it; and that is why he summoned the governors to help him. This is really very sad because President Buhari has run out of time and what Nigerians need now is a leadership, which has the political will, administrative experience and sound economic acumen to get Nigeria working again.”
He said the most nauseating aspect of the president ‘s negative assessment of the economy was that he had continued “to exhibit his cluelessness, incapacity and ineptitude in handling the economy by once again invoking the tired mantra of blaming the past administration and 16 years of PDP rule for his own failure.”
Atiku said Buhari’s comment was a confirmation of the forecast by the British multinational bank, HSBC, which predicted that re-electing the president in 2019 could plunge Nigeria into deeper economic hardship.
“Unless those in charge of the APC and the party’s supporters are, as usual, suffering from some form of self-delusion, it just does not make any sense for them to say that the APC-led federal government had brought succour to the ordinary Nigerian when President Buhari himself has admitted to governors of the 36 States of the federation that the economy has gone beyond his control,” he said, adding, “Or do we need a prophet to tell us that the president’s admission of the state of the nation’s economy is a vindication of our long held position and indeed the forecast by HSBC recently cited by the Nigerian media, where the bank had said a second term for Buhari would greatly stunt the economy of the country?”
He called on the APC to apologise to all Nigerians for bringing them nothing but suffering of unquantifiable proportion since 2015, and to make a solemn pledge not to have anything to do with governance again, especially with the 2019 elections fast approaching.
According to him, the hopes for better governance and improved standard of living that many had nursed with the assumption of office by the president in May 2015 has since given way to despair and hopelessness.
He stated, “The exchange rate of the Naira to the US dollar when the APC assumed office in 2015 was about 170 (official rate) to the dollar. Today it is 360 to the dollar. Today, millions of Nigerians, most of them youths, are unemployed, forcing them to become professional beggars, who wait with bated breath for the federal government’s monthly N5,000 handout and N10,000 Tradermoni aimed at bribing them to re-elect the party in the forthcoming elections.”
He continued, “Power generation has actually dipped from 4,949 megawatts PDP left it in 2015 to less than 3,500 megawatts even though Buhari’s handlers consistently claim that 7,000 megawatts is what is currently being generated. What more evidence do we need to know that the APC has been a curse rather than a blessing to our country?”

APGA Is The Clear Altertnative

Published

on

The Vice Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Jerry Chukwueke has condemned the non inclusion of APGA in the Vice Presidential debate conducted by BON and NEDG, yesterday, 14th December, 2018.

Chukwueke affirmed that APGA remains the clear alternative in the 2019 election, stating that the party is poised to change the skewed system of governance that has deepend ethno-religious crisis and furthered disintegratation of the country.

Chief Chukwueke regretted that such a scenario would play out in the fourth estate of the realm, an assumed haven of fairness and justice. He wondered at the modalities used by BON and NEDG to invite some candidates of other political parties to the debate to the exclusion of others.

Chukwueke argued that APGA deserved representation as the third largest political party in the country and decried the obvious marginalization. He warned that the hope of the common man hangs dangerously on the precipice since the custodian of their hope appears to have joined the party of dubious changers and sharers of our common patrimony.

Speaking with journalists at the Hilton Hotels and Towers Abuja yesterday, Chief Chukwueke declared APGA’s readiness to provide the needed paradigm shift and establish a new positive order in the country. He observed that Anambra State is a clear indication of what APGA intends to do in Nigeria.

Chukwueke observed that Anambra is among the 5 states in the country with the least monthly allocation, yet the least indebted. Anambra is also the 4th largest economy in Nigeria.

He emphasized that the type of prudence Gov Willie Obiano brought to governance in Anambra will form the template with which APGA will run government at the center.

On the impression that APGA is a regional party, Chukwueke was quick to dismiss it, stating that APGA has departed from the perception a long time ago. He mentioned that APGA is fielding candidates in almost all the elective positions in every state of the country.
Chukwueke maintained that the emergence of Gen. John Gbor as the Presidential candidate of the party further substantiates this as Gbor is from the middle belt.

Chukwueke however noted that the vision of Presidential candidate, Gbor and the party is to run an all inclusive government that will place more emphasis on value and merit than on tribe or religion. He opined that Nigeria is more divided because of poverty than by religion and ethnicity.
Chief Chukwueke confirmed that poverty eradication, justice and equity shall form the main thrust of an APGA government.

THE PROGRESSIVE AGENDA OF APGA IF GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEAD THE GOVERNMENT OF OUR DEAR COUNTRY NIGERIA.

Published

on

The Vice Presidential Candidate under the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Jerry Chukwueke on Saturday put a diplomatic fight against insurgency and establishment of economic zones upon the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria at the heart of his bid to oversee alongside the presidential candidate, Gen. John Gbor, the affairs of this country, as official campaigning got under way for elections next year.

Nigeria, more than ever before, needs a stable and people-focused government to move the agenda for our country forward. The problem of Nigeria is that the structure is resting on a shifting/sliding sand.

We need a government which will shift from the discussions on formula to share, to discussions on formula to manufacture.

The problem of Nigeria is the problem of a mother who is afraid to wean her child, she breastfeeds her child to old age. The effect is that the child never fight for survival, rather he forever depends on the mother.

What happens if eventually the breast milk gets drained and stops to flow, both the child and the mother perishes.

Our past and present governments have not been able to diversify our economy, we depend solely on crude oil which will someday loose relevance.

About the year 2030, automobiles will be electronically powered, crude oil will begin to loose importance, demands will reduce with subsequent fall in price.

THE BIG QUESTION IS; IN THIS SITUATION, WHAT WILL BE THE FATE OF NIGERIA AND NIGERIANS??

The APGA led government will open up the system and build a solid foundation through;

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF ECONOMIC ZONES:

We focus on those infrastructural, economic and developmental factors of the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria.

These respective zones calls the attention of the federal government cum foreign investors on the key economic factors of the zone which when harnessed and developed will economically and automatically empower the zone in a competitive way.

In the South East for instance, there wont be any need for Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi etc to spend their resources on giant projects, all they need to do is come together, save some money, get the attention and support of the federal government and foreign investors as an entity to focus on those economic activities that thrive best in the zone, be it agriculture, housing, education, commerce etc. By this Nigeria will be physically restructured and placed on a very solid foundation.

SECURITY:

This is very important and will be invested in to secure the lives of people, properties and economic investments in these zones.

The APGA led government knows that we are a nation who does not believe in itself and its military and by this, kills the morale of our armed forces.

Not long ago Nigeria paid for military equipments that will be delivered in the year 2023, shall we cross our hands and wait till 2023 while our people die everyday due to insurgency? HELL NO!

We shall make the commitment to bring in military contractors who shall come in with their mechanized and man power. They shall help us fight insurgency, restore peace and security, train our people and recoup our military.

ENCOURAGEMENT AND SUPPORT FOR CATTLE RANCHING IN THE NORTH:

The APGA led government is ready to make commitment to encourage cattle ranching in the North. We are prepared to involve the CBN to provide finances to encourage farmers who are ready to adapt, invest and build ranching in the North.

The APGA led government shall stand with farmers to ensure they have the support they need to grow the agricultural value chain. We shall make commitment for massive water irrigation in the North to reclaim our desert lands and generate more vegetative area for our cattles. This will reduce the pressure of cattle rearers coming down south and eternally put an end to the often conflict between farmers and herdsmen.

REDUCTION IN THE COST OF GOVERNANCE BY 5%:
The cost of maintenance for our government officials is outrageous, the APGA led government shall reduce the cost of governance by 5%, ranging from the federal to the state and local government functionaries.

The funds recovered from the reductions shall be directed to our health, housing and education sectors.

As has been the case since the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) started publishing the Human Development Index (HDI), Nigeria’s 2017 HDI statistics and the World Health Organisation’s World Health Statistics 2017, tell a woeful story about our health systems.

Nigeria must improve funding for health care and ensure that we not only retain our medical professionals but attract those in the Diaspora who left the country in search of greener pastures.

The increased funding that shall become available shall be used in improving facilities at public hospitals and schools and to enhance the remuneration of our teachers and medical personnel so as to ensure parity with their peers who have similar qualifications and experience in the western countries.

GENERAL GBOR PRESENTS APGA’S FIVE CARDINAL COVENANT TO SOUTHWEST LEADERS.

Published

on

The Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Retired General John Gbor has reiterated the determination of his party to re-enact true federalism in Nigeria if elected in the February 16, 2019 presidential election.
General Gbor gave this assurance while exchanging views with the leaders of the Yoruba sociocultural group, Afenifere in Akure, Ondo state.
He unveiled APGA’s five cardinal covenant anchored on; True Federalism, Security, Economic Reconstruction driven by private enterprise in post-oil setting, Social Agenda involving health care reform, education, social housing policy, youth, women and empowerment of physically challenged persons with the intention to set up Youth Agency in the Presidency.
The APGA Presidential standard bearer maintained that his party presents the best opportunity for paradigm shift in governance in Nigeria, contrary to the ugly experiences of the citizenry under governments sponsored by the All Progressives Congress, APC and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the past nineteen years.
In his remark, the leader of Afenifere, Pa Ayo Fasoranti, assured General Gbor of the readiness of the Yoruba Ethnic Nationality to cooperate with any group genuinely committed to the Restructuring of the Nigerian Federation in order to restore true federalism in the country.
Pa Fasoranti recalled what he described as the golden days of genuine federal system of government in Nigeria before the overthrow of the First Republic by the military in 1966, pointing out that in that era the four federating units of the country effectively controlled their resources and developed socioeconomically at their own pace.
For his part, a former Secretary of the Government of the federation and National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Chief Olu Falae enthused that the people of the Southwest geopolitical zone would work in synergy with the APGA as a viable Third Force to wrestle power from the APC-PDP oligarchy which according to him has in the past two decades grossly misruled Nigeria to the detriment of the masses.
Chief Falae maintained that as far as he was concerned the APC and PDP are two sides of the same coin and urged the Nigerian electorate to shun both parties and vote massively for genuine progressive parties in the 2019 general elections in the country.

We Can’t Expect People Who Destroyed Our Past To Improve Our Future – YPP’s Getso

Published

on

The Vice-Presidential candidate of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), Umma Getso, has warned that it will be a mistake to expect those who have governed Nigeria before to solve its problems.
She said this on Friday during the NEDG/BON Vice-Presidential Debate, which was held at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja.
“To be candid, YPP is a party that is here to bring a new thing,” she said.
“It is a party that is founded with the new ideology to bring a new set of politicians because we cannot expect people who destroyed our past to come and improve our future tomorrow.”
According to her, her party will, among other things, focus on girl-child education if voted into power.
“I have a passion for the girl-child education and I spent the early part of my adulthood in the development of the common Nigerian,” she said.
Getso who briefly introduced herself as the daughter of a former Senator from Bauchi State stated that her background had equipped her to serve people well.
She explained that her belief that Nigeria would get better prompted her to join the race with YPP’s presidential candidate, Professor Kingsley Moghalu.
While stressing that Nigerians were yearning for better leadership, Getso stated that the YPP was committed to creating that paradigm shift in leadership styles.
She added, “As a mother of three, I have been through the lowest level of Nigeria’s standard of living and I know how Nigerians are suffering. I know that there is no substantial thing from 1999 till date that a typical Nigerian will show today.”

Knocks for Peter Obi for quoting dubious statistics

Published

on

Fact checkers went to work Friday night to puncture some of the statistics quoted by Peter Obi, the vice-presidential candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party at the live TV debate at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.
In arguing that petrol subsidy that he estimated to be a trillion naira a year was a waste, Obi said there are only two million vehicles in Nigeria.
Fact-checking revealed otherwise. According to National Bureau of Statistics(NBS), Nigeria has over 11.5million vehicles on the road, as at 2017.
Obi also claimed that intra-African trade is just a mere 9 per cent. He was proven wrong. Intra-African trade, according to Afreximbank Africa Trade Report 2018, is estimated at 15 per cent. In 2016, this was estimated at 18 per cent of its total exports and imports. IMF even gave an estimate of 20 per cent of the total trade volume of about one trillion dollars.
Obi was correct when he said oil exports still accounts for 80 per cent of Nigeria’s dollar revenue. However, oil contribution to GDP has dwindled to about 10 per cent, according to NBS.
But he was caught out when he claimed that his administration as governor of Anambra state was the first to buy up to 30,000 computers for schools. Twitterati said Governor Kayode Fayemi bought more in his first term in Ekiti State. He reportedly bought 48,000 Samsung laptops, 30,000 for students and 18,000 for teachers.
Despite the statistical goofs, Obi was praised by many PDP sympathisers for his performance during the debate.
Aminu Tambuwal, governor of Sokoto state, who had not tweeted for a long time, wrote:
