APC Rejects New Date Fixed for Adamawa Supplementary Election

Published

on

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa has rejected the new date, March 28, fixed by the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) for the supplementary governorship election in the state.
The Organising Secretary of the party,Alhaji Ahmed Lawal, announced the party’s decision in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola on Tuesday.
Lawal said that INEC did not consult the party before fixing the new date for the poll.

He alleged that information had filtered out earlier that the election would be held on Thursday, March 28.
“INEC failed to consult with political parties involved in this election before going ahead to fix a new date for the re-run.
“We, therefore, became suspicious due to rumours in town earlier that supplementary election would be conducted on Thursday and it turned out to be true.
“We are not afraid of re-run election but INEC should have done the right thing.
“How can you fix an election on a working day. Are civil servants not going to participate in the election.
“We are going to forward our protest on the matter to INEC,’’ he said.
NAN reports that an Adamawa High Court sitting in Yola had earlier vacated an order restraining INEC from conducting a supplementary election in the state.
INEC, therefore, fixed March 28 for the election.

Supplementary polls: Vote any party of your choice – Buhari tells electorate

Published

on

President Muhammadu Buhari says he believes in the will of the people and cannot put pressure on voters to elect leaders they do not like.
Buhari in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Friday, dismissed insinuations that he was forcing voters to elect candidates other than those they preferred during the supplementary elections scheduled for 17 states on March 23.
The president said at no time did he give instructions that the electorate should vote particular candidates.
The President assured Nigerians that he was ready to work with elected representatives of the people regardless of party platforms on which they were elected.
President Buhari said he would work in the best interest of the country and democracy.
President Buhari, who thanked voters for re-electing him for a second term in office, said he would never forget their sacrifices in defying harsh weather conditions to vote for him.
He said: ‘‘I was deeply overwhelmed by your show of incredible confidence in me, and I will never let you down.
“Thank you for your sincere show of support for me.’’
President Buhari, however, appealed to voters not to get tired of coming out to vote in the supplementary elections, adding ‘‘these elections are no less important than others before them.’’
He appealed to voters to vote for the candidates they believed would deliver on promises because “it is your constitutionally guaranteed democratic rights.
President Buhari also called on INEC and security agencies to ensure that the supplementary elections are conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law and constitution.
He, therefore, called on the electorate to come out en masse and participate in the supplementary elections.

Election Petition Tribunal Declares Adeleke Winner of Osun Election

Published

on

The Osun state Election Petition Tribunal has declared Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the 2018 governorship in the state.
The 3-man tribunal upheld the petitions filed by Adeleke and the PDP, challenging the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Governor Gboyega Oyetola at the governorship election.
A three -member panel of the tribunal , dismissed the objections filed by Gov. Oyetola, APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Both Adeleke and the PDP in their different petitions had urged the tribunal to declared that he scored the highest lawful votes in the election and should be declared as winner.
The PDP Canddidate, Adeleke and party, had filed a petition asking the tribunal to declare that he polled the highest lawful votes and should be declared the winner.
But Oyetola, APC and INEC had filed their notices of preliminary objection contending among others that the petition was incompetent and that the court lacked jurisdiction.
The tribunal ruled that the certificate of return issued to Oyetola of the APC be withdrawn and a new one given to Senator Ademola.

Nigeria Cannot Grow With Election Rigging, Says Peter Obi

Published

on

Mr Peter Obi, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in February 23, 2019, Presidential election, has said that the nation cannot grow with election rigging.
Mr Obi in a statement on Sunday, said that the process through which people come into office is far more important than what they do thereafter and that forms the basis of their integrity.
He asserted that election rigging is the worst form of vices and indeed the root of corruption as it goes to impact negatively on the political and economic growth of the country.

Mr. Obi notes that the fraud that characterized this year’s election has greatly undermined the country’s democracy, its future and has significantly damaged the on going fight against all vices and tainted the integrity of those responsible.
The VP candidate who governed Anambra state for eight years said through a statement from his media office, that Nigeria cannot quantify the enormity of damage the electoral fraud has done to the psyche of the country.
He described such negative acts like election manipulation as the the real reason why this country is not growing and has been unable to tackle the existing myriads of problems like unemployment and its attendant vices.
“The only thing rigging does to a country is that it continues to keep incompetent people in office, and as a result rather than put energy in creating jobs to engage its teeming youths, it instead channels it trying to contain all sorts of vices and brigandage..
He also lamented the further effects of election rigging which encourages incompetent person to hang on în office and cause more harm to the society.
Obi finally remarked that his main concern and worry is how to create jobs and engage millions of Nigerian youths roaming the streets doing nothing at their prime productive ages.

2019 ELECTION RIGGING CLAIMS: Buhari group replies Peter Obi

Published

on

A pro-President Muhammadu Buhari group in South East under the aegis of Zikist-Buharist-Movement (ZBM), has faulted the election rigging claim by the vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi.
Obi had in a statement on Sunday claimed that there were high level election rigging during the 2019 general elections and said that no nation can move forward when its leaders come to power through rigged polls.
“The fraud which characterised this year’s election has greatly undermined the country’s democracy, its future and has significantly damaged the ongoing fight against all vices and tainted the integrity of those responsible,” Obi added.
But responding in a statement issued in Enugu on Monday by the group’s secretary, Barr. Godwin Onwusi, ZBM told Obi that his party PDP lost the presidential election not because of rigging but due to the use of card readers, which it said do not allow manipulations.
ZBM said, “The fraud and violence are not substantial enough to vitiate the general election. We understand where His Excellency, Peter Obi is coming from, an era when as Governor in 2011, the then President Goodluck Jonathan got millions of votes in Anambra, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi and Enugu states. That era is gone, thanks to the ubiquitous Card Reader, which makes rigging at collation center cumbersome.

“May we ask Peter Obi, what their pillar of support, ex-president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo could have done if his main strongholds – Kano and Bauchi are threatened and hanging on the cliff-hanger of inconclusive elections?”
On the argument that the election could not have been free and with the number of votes Buhari scored in Kano, Katsina, and Bauchi ZBM said:
“Obi should recall that Buhari has a treasure Vote-Bank of 12 million voters, which since his first outing in 2003 presidential election had surfaced, and resurfaced in 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019.
“It’s possible Obi was one of those who thought Atiku will erode the Aminu Kano tradition in the North, which Buhari not only inherited, but epitomise. It is a tradition of integrity quotient and prudence management of public finance. Atiku is deficit on this tradition and the votes reflected it.

“ZBM understanding is that Obi is one of those who failed to reason that the day His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar was rigged was when the Ohaneze Ndigbo, Afenifere, Middle Belt Forum and PANDEF of the South South, adopted Atiku as their son, hence exercised him from his kinsmen and neighbour in the North East and North West respectively. Our tradition frowns at adoption of someone’s son without permission.”

Aisha Buhari urges APC members to stand firm on party’s constitution

Published

on

Wife of Nigeria’s President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, has called on members of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in Nigeria to stand firm and ensure that members of the party are appointed into President Muhammadu Buhari’s next cabinet.
Mrs. Buhari stated this at the victory luncheon, organized in Lagos by the wife of the Vice President, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo, for all those who contributed to the success of APC in the 2019 general election.
“I will also ask members of our party, that is the stepping stone for any elected person in Nigeria, to mark sure that we stand firm and make sure that we operate within the guidelines or constitution of the party.
“In this administration we have some members of the cabinet that are not card-carrying members of our party.
“This time, the party has to be very firm to make sure that all the cabinet members are card-carrying members, and not only that, they should be known party members, who are very active in their locality.”
Mrs. Buhari recognized the work done by various individuals and groups towards achieving success for President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo at the polls.
She listed those who made contributions to include the zonal women leaders, youth groups, artistes and singers from across Nigeria.
“Your significant contributions are appreciated and as the president promised women and youth would be engaged in the second term.
“I therefore call on you all not to relent in our collective duty in making the next level a reality.”
The president’s wife paid glowing tribute to Mrs. Osinbajo “for standing in for me during the campaign when I was in a bed rest.”
According to Mrs. Buhari the victory of the APC at the election showed the confidence Nigerians have in President Buhari and his deputy to drive progress of the country.
“This success is a result of the firm belief Nigerians have in the ability of this administration’s developmental agenda to take us to the next level.
“It also calls for the president and the vice president to continue to build on the foundation of the good work they started.”
While expressing gratitude to God for saving the lives of President Buhari, her son, Yusuf, and Vice President Osinbajo, Mrs. Buhari said she would remain committed to promoting the socio-economic and political advancement of women through her pet project, the Future Assured Programme.
In his remarks at the event, Governor-elect of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who represented the National Leader of the APC and former Governor of Lagos, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, commended Mrs. Buhari for setting up the Women and Youth Team of the Presidential Campaign Council, which contributed a lot to success of the party.
Earlier in her opening speech, Mrs. Osinbajo expressed gratitude to God for protecting President Buhari, who crisscrossed the 36 states of Nigeria, canvassing for votes during the electioneering and for making the vice president come out unscathed in the helicopter crash that occurred during the campaigns.

My Next Target is to become the Red Chamber’s deputy president – Senator Tinubu

Published

on

. As Sanwo-Olu Wins Polling Unit

Wife of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Remi Tinubu, said her next target is to become the Senate Deputy President, as the only woman with a third mandate in the Senate.
Tinubu, who stated this yesterday, in an interview with The Guardian, expressed optimism that APC would continue to win in Lagos and other states, as long as the party continues to develop people and the country.
She lamented the participation of too many insignificant parties in the election, saying it makes it confusing and complicated for most of the illiterate voters, as well as money wasting and time consuming.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate in Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu won his Lateef Jakande/Femi Okunu polling unit 019, in yesterday’s Gubernatorial and House Assembly elections in the state.
He got a total of 124 votes, to defeat his closest rival, Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 26 votes.
Also, the APC House of Assembly candidate, Ishau Gbolahan, defeated his PDP counterpart with 114 votes against 30.
However, the polling unit experienced poor voter turnout with only 159 accredited voters out of the 1,098 registered in the unit.
